Who We Are
Making an impact.

Bergmann Center, Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Charlevoix, Michigan, dedicated to empowering differently-abled individuals—including those with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities—through inclusive, person-centered services.
Our story began in the 1950s, when a group of local families came together to advocate for children with disabilities—at a time when institutionalization was the norm. In 1965, under the leadership of Lillian Bergmann, that grassroots movement evolved into a formal work activity center focused on education, employment, and community integration. Lillian’s vision and compassion laid the foundation for what would become one of Michigan’s longest-standing disability service providers.
Over the decades, Bergmann Center has grown through advocacy, generosity, and innovation. From early relocations and facility expansions to the development of new programs and partnerships, we’ve remained committed to dignity, inclusion, and transformative care.

Today, we live our mission through IMPACT:
• I – Involvement: Creating opportunities for engagement, connection, and community participation
• M – Mentorship: Advocating for individuals and walking alongside them with empathy and support
• P – Progress: Providing education and skill-building that nurture growth and self-determination
• A – Access: Expanding pathways to employment, resources, and inclusive environments
• C – Community: Building partnerships that celebrate diversity and strengthen regional inclusion
• T – Transformation: Driving positive change—for individuals, families, and the systems that serve them
Most of the individuals we serve are referred through Community Mental Health, and we proudly support families and guardians as they navigate the Medicaid system and connect with essential resources. From our resale shop and vocational programs to our Master Class series and advocacy efforts, we are building a legacy of compassion, capability, and community.

What We Do
Making an Impact.
At Bergmann Center, we deliver inclusive, person-centered programs that support differently-abled individuals—including those with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities—in building skills, pursuing goals, and connecting with their communities.
We are a Medicaid-authorized provider of services that promote independence, employment, and community inclusion. These include:
• Skill Building: Time-limited, goal-driven supports that help individuals develop adaptive, social, and vocational skills—preparing them for meaningful activities like school, volunteering, and competitive integrated employment.
• Supported Employment: One-on-one job coaching and career planning to help individuals obtain and sustain paid employment in integrated settings, matched to their strengths and goals.
• Community Living Supports (CLS): In-home and community-based assistance with daily living, relationship building, transportation, and personal care—designed to foster independence and participation.
• Out-of-Home Non-Vocational Supports: Structured habilitation services in community settings that reinforce skills and promote maximum functioning, coordinated with each individual’s care plan.
We are actively working to expand our services through partnerships with Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) and Home Help through MDHHS, which will serve to further strengthen our commitment to employment access, caregiver support, and individualized service planning.
Every program we offer is rooted in our core pillars: Education, Employment, Empowerment, and Advocacy. We meet individuals where they are—and walk alongside them as they grow, contribute, and thrive.
