Equity

Be the Impact.

Inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities means creating environments where they are equaly welcomed, valued, and supported in all aspects of life - as each of us would do for anyone. Integration means that as a community, we include those with IDD diagnoses in the same community opportunities that would be provided for others; these opportunities frequently take the form of education, employment, social activities, and community event participation. Integration goes beyond mere physical access and involves recognizing and respecting the unique abilities and needs of IDD individuals.  Inclusion ends the stigma.

Social inclusion involves building a life in the community, being valued for the role that the individual plays in the community, and having a sense of belonging.  An inclusive community means that there are reasonable accommodations for a person's physical or mental limitations, and that the environment is accessible. Further, inclusiveness combats the stigma associated with mental illness or developmental disabilities by fostering positive attitudes and empathy toward challenged persons and helps to eliminate stereotypes. The Bergmann Center focuses on developing a widespread, deeper understanding of the challenges individuals may face and believes that inclusion is kindness and acceptance in its greatest form.
