Why Volunteer With Us?

Do you like to help individuals gain new skills, explore creative outlets, enjoy the outdoors, and build self-confidence?. Whether you’re gardening, assisting with a reading program, leading arts and crafts,, or mentoring through your own experiences, you’ll find a sense of purpose and accomplishment when you volunteer your time and talents with the Bergmann Center.  Your involvement opens doors to your own personal growth, social inclusion, and helps you build stronger community connections.

Ways to Get Involved

The Bergmann Center team invites you to share your talents directly with program participants or at our resale shop. Here are just a few ways you can make a difference:

  • Teach or demonstrate skills: Arts and crafts, music, storytelling, reading, puzzles, movies, and other social activities.  Love to listen to Elvis, Motown, Musicals, Morgan Wallen or the Stones?  Bring it with you and sing along! PS - We have a piano!

  • Share life skills: Cooking in our brand new  remodeled kitchen, grocery shopping, household maintenance and safety, or pet care. Help our program participants make pet treats, cupcakes, or plan a healthy grocery list, then go shopping!

  • Support field trips: Accompany staff and participants to the grocery,  library, bowling alley, fire department, park, theater, and more fun excursions that provide socializing skills  and learning experiences for participants

  • Lead outdoor and gardening projects: Plan and implement forest therapy sessions, hikes, plant flowers and vegetables each spring, and explore what nature has to offer with our program participants

  • Resale Shop Customer Service:  Assist customers,  product sorting, display setup and general customer service. Click here for more information on Resale Shop Volunteer Requirements.

Have a unique idea? We’d love to hear it—just reach out to our CEO to discuss how you can contribute!

Prefer to Help Behind the Scenes?

If you’d rather not work directly with program participants, you can assist with administrative tasks, mailings, newsletters, event planning, fundraising, or even serve on our Board of Directors.

Championing Inclusion

Volunteers  play a vital role in promoting inclusion and accessibility throughout Northern Michigan. By sharing your experiences as a Bergmann Volunteer, you help challenge stereotypes and foster greater understanding of the abilities and contributions of people with disabilities.  You help to eliminate stigma in our communities!

Everyone Is Welcome to Volunteer!

People with disabilities, their family members, and anyone interested in making a difference are encouraged to volunteer in ways that are meaningful to them. Volunteering is a powerful way to step outside your comfort zone, discover new interests, and feel valued and appreciated—especially for those who may have felt marginalized or isolated in the past.

NOTE:  Complying with Medicaid program requirements, a volunteer may be requested to participate in a simple background check, be certified in FIRST AID/CPR training  or may have other specific training requirements conducted at Bergmann expense and at a time convenient to the volunteer.  Volunteers will receive training appropriate to their volunteer interests.  Training typically includes  Medicaid regulations and requirements for compliance in HIPAA privacy and Recipient rights. Cost for training is paid for by the Bergmann Center. Please ask what requirements, if any, are needed for your specific volunteer efforts!.
