Engagement
Be the Impact.
Engagement is a key goal of most IDD individuals who desire to lead their own lives as active members of the community. In order to do that, Bergmann offers programs which empower an individual to make good decisions and personal choices while aiding their local community.
Community engagement helps IDD individuals integrate into their communities, fostering relationships, employment, and participation in civic life. It promotes well-being and combats a sense of loneliness that is too often experienced by those with I/DD. The Bergmann philosophy is that everyone, regardless of intellectual capability, has a need to belong in their community. Bergmann Center offers community living supports which help an IDD individual make friends, build a social circle, and experience a positive life in their community.

Engagement Services

Key elements of engaging an individual within the community include community living supports, living services and volunteering as described below:
Community Living Supports (CLS)

Community Living Supports (CLS) help adults identify personal goals and work toward achieving them through individualized supports. These services promote independence, safety, and inclusion in the most integrated community settings possible. Supports may include:
-
Daily living skills such as self‑care, shopping, cooking, managing finances, and using public transportation
-
Referrals and support for mental and physical health services, including assistance with appointments, medication reminders, and treatment follow‑up
-
Participation in social, leisure, and recreational activities
-
Building and maintaining relationships with family, friends, and community members
-
Staff assistance to preserve health and safety while promoting independence
-
Money management and non‑medical care (not requiring nurse or physician intervention)
-
Socialization opportunities outside the family circle
-
Transportation to and among community activities (excluding medical appointments covered by Medicaid FFS/MHP)
Adult Community Living Services

At the Bergmann Activity Center and in community settings, adult participants with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) engage in structured, community‑based programs tailored to their Person‑Centered Plan of Service. These programs support personal goals, well‑being, social interaction, and skill development through activities such as:
-
Arts and crafts for creativity and self‑expression
-
Vocational training and skill practice
-
Community engagement and socialization skill development
-
Cooking, games, and activities that build cognitive and daily living skills
-
Music and recreational activities for enjoyment and relaxation
-
General living skills training to promote independence
Volunteering and Community Engagement
Volunteering provides adults with IDD meaningful opportunities to connect with their community, build self‑esteem, and experience a sense of purpose. Through volunteer roles, participants gain valuable skills that may lead to future employment opportunities while also contributing positively to the organizations and communities they serve. Volunteering fosters both social and emotional growth for individuals and strengthens the broader community.
